Defence
Services rout Galle
By S.R. Pathiravithana
Defending champions Defence Services HA proved their prowess once
again when they routed Galle Xl by seven goals to nil in their quarter-final
tie at the 47th Hockey Nationals continued at the Astro Turf Court
Reid Avenue yesterday.
In the other
quarter-final game to be completed yesterday, the young Sri Lanka
Schools outfit came up with a gutty performance against the much
experienced State Services team, but the latter reserved their semi-final
berth with a 7-6 win after a penalty shoot-out after the game had
first ended in a 2-all draw which was followed by a 4-all penalty
shoot-out. However in the final tussle the experienced State Servicemen
clinched the game with a 1-nil lead.
When rain prevented
any further play at 4. p. m. the third quarter-final game between
Mercantile HA and Colombo Xl was in progress. When play was called
off for the day neither side had scored. This game will continue
at 6.30 a.m. today, followed by the final quarter-final game between
Wennapuwa HA and Matale HA.
In the women's
tournament the four semi-final games will get under way at 8 a.m.
The games on the card are Kandy HA vs Sri Lanka Schools' Xl and
Colombo HA vs State Services HA.
In the men's
semi-finals Defence Services HA will take on the winners of the
Wennapuwa-Matale encounter while State Services will meet the winners
of the Mercantile-Colombo game.
The women's final will be played at 4.p.m. followed by the men's
final.
