Lanka's
IT professionals rank with the best in Asia
Two network experts from Millennium Information Technologies took
the Bronze Medal in the 2003 Asia-Pacific Tech Mastermind quiz,
showing that Sri Lanka's IT expertise is as good as any other Asian
expert.
The quiz, a
gruelling test of IT knowledge and skills, was conducted by Cisco
Systems, the world's leading supplier of networking equipment. Over
300 teams entered the contest. Eleven won through the finals in
Singapore.
Lalith L. Silva
and Imal Kalutotage of Millennium IT beat off a powerful challenge
from several Indian teams, as well as contestants from Australia,
China, New Zealand and many ASEAN countries. 'We actually thought
the competition was going to be tougher,' said Silva.
'I guess we
Sri Lankans sometimes underestimate ourselves!' Damith Hettihewa,
who runs the Cisco business at Millennium IT, was not so surprised.
"I knew Imal and Lalith were going to do it,' he insisted.
"Those guys are serious experts.' He was quick to add, though,
that such accomplishment is expected at Millennium IT.
The Millennium
team had first to win through at the SAARC regional finals of the
Tech Mastermind quiz before going on to the finals in Singapore.
'That was like a dream for us,' Kalutotage said. 'India is a big
IT power nowadays the industry was huge and we were facing the cream
of the crop. Still,' he added, 'we made it.' |
