Golf
National Championship
The Sri Lanka Golf Union has announced that preparations are afloat
for the 112th Championship which will be held in Nuwara Eliya this
year through the last weekend of November 2003. The invaders from
Pakistan and India are packed and ready and reliable reports have
it that we will have arrivals from Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
There is promise from Indonesia too and most probably Dubai. Ana
Punchihewa is the new President of the Union and if he puts his
organising skills together we are assured of a helluva great competition.
In the old
days Pin Fernando 7 times Champion dominated the scene with little
or no competition locally but when the invasion commenced from India
Pin began to lose the grip against stunning golfers like Prince
Pittamber, Biloo Sethi and Vickramjit Singh. After his premature
demise the Indians took a stranglehold on our title and as standards
remain now there is absolutely no hope of us regaining the crown
in the forseable future. In the ladies Title event since Tiru Fernando
left the scene we have been pushed into the wilderness unless Thuhashini
Selvaratnam, the best product Sri Lanka has produced appears and
grabs the Title for us.
Monsoon meetOver
the next two weekends the Royal Colombo Golf Club moves into another
highly competitive crop of competitions. The North East Monsoon
Meet envelopes the following Competitions Clifford Cup, Centenary
Trophy, Mackinlay Quaish and the Golf Medal where Rusi Captain has
a firm grip and a souk. Nimal Perera, the genial Chairman of Luxury
Apartment Developing Premier Pacific Ltd., will sponsor the entire
competition and there is no doubt the promotion lost him an arm
and a leg.
MacbridesIn
the year 1911 the Executive Committee of the R.C.G.C. inaugurated
a foursomes competition and presented a Challenge Trophy in memory
of Hon. Robert Know Macbride in recognition of the signal contribution
he made towards the advancement of Golf in general and the Royal
Colombo in particular. November will be loaded with a harvest of
Golf over all the weekends. Success is promised with Sarath Piyaratne
and Kumar Boralessa behind the scene in Colombo and Clive Tissera
in the forefront in Nuwara Eliya. |
