Sri
Lanka to send Development Squad to Thailand
The national sevens team for the Kings Cup in Thailand will be represented
by a development squad. This was told to The Sunday Times by Executive
Director of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) Chandrishan
Perera who led the national team to victory at the Fiji Sevens in
1994.
Chandrishan
Perera further told that taking into consideration of the time of
travelling condition of the players and the recovery period we have
decided to send two different squads for Kings Cup and the other
2 IRB tournaments in Dubai and South Africa.
Kings Cup in
Thailand will be an ideal opportunity for the youngsters as this
is a good exposure for them. The Dubai Sevens and South African
Sevens will be represented by one team.
He also told
that the Sevens squad will be brought down to 20 and two separate
teams will be maintained. Shan also thanked Singer Sri Lanka for
proping up in order to start the "Rugby Players Bank",
where all the information of the players such as Weight, Height,
School, Clubs played will be maintained.
This will also
help the youngsters in the age group of 17-24 to gain the much needed
job opportunities. This project was mooted by a former rugby player
Senarath Alwis. -SJ |
