Britain
offers working holidays for Lankans
UK Working Holidaymaker visas are on offer through the British High
Commission in Colombo. The High Commission said that visa applications
could be obtained after making a telephone appointment by calling
2335805 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 8 a.m.
and 1 p.m. on Fridays.
The working
holidaymaker scheme is an arrangement where a Commonwealth citizen
aged between 17 and 30 can come to the United Kingdom for an extended
holiday for up to two years. Persons will be permitted to work,
but will be expected to take a holiday during their stay.
This is a worldwide
scheme and there is no closing date for the scheme as such.
The working holidaymaker scheme does not place any restrictions
on the type of work a person can do.
There is no
specific amount of money that a person must have to qualify for
entry as a working holidaymaker. However, they must be able to show
that they have enough money to pay for the return journey and to
pay for accommodation and living expenses for at least the first
month after arrival without recourse to public funds.
