Mahinda
to be indicted for attack on grads
Minister Mahinda Wijesekara is to be indicted for his involvement
in the attack on unemployed graduates who were carrying out a token
protest fast in the Kottegoda area in Matara two months ago.
The Sunday
Times learns that Mr. Wijesekara is to be charged for unlawful assembly
and causing mischief and hurt. Minister Wijesekara, along with a
group of his supporters had allegedly surrounded the graduates who
were protesting opposite a place where a government exhibition was
in progress. Several ministers and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe
had been invitees to the exhibition.
Six unemployed
graduates were critically injured during the attack and rushed to
the Matara hospital. Later a Buddhist monk had attempted suicide
by setting himself on fire in protest against the attack.
The Minister
had denied any involvement in the incident, but eyewitnesses confirmed
the minister was present during the attack. |
