SP
bus strike continues
By Gamini Madura
Talks held between the private bus operators and the Southern Province
transport commission to resolve the four day long bus strike in
the South was unsuccessful.
The private bus operators who launched the strike on Thursday demanded
that the Transport Minister intervenes to resolve the issue.
A 500 strong
group backed by the President of the Private Bus Operators Association
in the Southern Province stormed the office of the Southern Transport
Commission office on Friday threatening to take the Transport Commissioner
and his staff hostage.
The strikers
had made ten demands and with no signs of resolution the strike
is bound to continue. On the first day of the strike angry commuters
are alleged to have damaged a bus. Following this incident private
buses ground to a halt. Buses running on the main route including
the by roads came to a halt. The Transport Commission has threatened
to cancel the route permits if the strike is not called off. |
