St
Anne's pip St Michael's
By M. Shamil Amit
St Anne's Kurunegala registered an upset 62 points to 59 win over
favourites St Michael's Batticaloa in a Invitation Peace Basketball
Tournament Group 'A' match played in the evening session at the
St Lawrence's basketball courts yesterday evening, the match being
decided after extra time of play.
In a game that
went to the wire with no quarters asked or given the spikers from
Kurunegala gave the Batticaloa boys a torrid time matching them
in all departments of play. The Annites played creditably well to
make the score level at 57 at the end of the full time.
Earlier in the
day St Anne's recorded another win against Holy Cross College, Kalutara
75 points to 64 and with the win against St Michael's they won all
their matches in the league stage to top the Group 'A' followed
by St Michael's who also won their game in the morning when they
beat St Patrick's Jaffna easily by 78 points to 46.
Meanwhile in
the Group 'B' section Maris Stella, Negombo won both the games that
they played yesterday. In the morning session they recorded a close
66 points to 63 win over St Anthony's and then in the evening defeated
St Joseph's, Trincomalee by 47 points to 41.
In the other
two matches played in the evening St Peter's had their unbeaten
record tarnished by the Antonians who defeated them by 64 points
to 47 while in a low scoring game Holy Cross, Kalutara beat St Patrick's
Jaffna by 26 points to 24. The Peterites though losing a game headed
Group 'B' by the virtue of having defeated Maris Stella in the league
game.
The top two
teams of both the groups qualify to play in the semi final which
is scheduled to be whistled off at 7.00 a.m. today with St Peter's
down to play St Michael's followed by the semi final between St
Anne's and Maris Stella at 8.00 a.m. The final will be preceded
with the consolation final between the two losers of the semi final
while the final will be at 5.00 p.m.
The winners
of the main final will receive the Invitation Peace Basketball Trophy
presented by the rector of St Peter's while the winners of the consolation
will also receive a trophy presented by the old boys group 87-92
of St Peter's. A trophy for the best player of the tournament will
also be offered presented by Marlon Ranasinghe. Distinguished old
boys of St Peter's Nivaad Cabraal and Mahinda Samarasinghe will
grace the occasion. |
