Tiger
radio expands, Tiger TV soon
Two new relay stations in uncleared
Batticaloa

The LTTE has decided to expand its broadcasting services to the
Eastern Province and resume its television services, a spokesman
said. Voice of Tigers chief Thamil Anban alias Javan has declared
that the broadcasting services would be expanded by setting up two
more relay stations in the uncleared areas of Batticaloa.
But under the
existing licence given by the government for LTTE radio transmissions,
the group would need approval by the authorities in Colombo for
the expansion of its broadcasting network.
A spokesman
for the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) said such
expansion would need approval not only from the TRC but also from
Defence and Mass Communication Ministries. The two ministries and
the TRC are now under the purview of the President.
The VOT chief
said the broadcast from the LTTE's main radio station in Kilinochchi
would be transmitted to the East. Meanwhile, the LTTE is also planning
to revive 'Nidharshanam' television services which were suspended
some 13 years ago after Indian Peace Keeping Forces bombed the station
in Jaffna.
It is learnt
that the TV service would be first transmitted in the Wanni district
and then expanded elsewhere. Early this year the LTTE expanded its
broadcasting services by upgrading its radio station in Kilinochchi
after the government granted permission for it to import equipment
and gave a licence to operate.
Since then the
LTTE's radio service has been covering Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Jaffna
and Mullaitivu areas.Already the radio station is reported to be
broadcasting to a radius of 60 to 70 kilometres from Kilinochchi. |
