Reckitts
closure under probe
The Labour Commissioner is investigating the closure of Reckitts
Benckiser Lanka Limited (RBSL), which put 159 employees out of work.
The investigation is expected to reveal the reasons for the sudden
termination of the manufacturing operation of RBSL, and whether
they have violated any labour laws.
Workers who
lost their jobs have been carrying out a protest outside the factory.
Speaking to The Sunday Times FT a trade union leader said, "The
labour commissioner has not approved of the termination of RBSL
operations. This is a big issue."
Commenting
on this an official from the Labour Department said, "We are
trying our best to resolve this issue. An investigation is going
on and we are trying to reopen the factory."
Even though
the company requested workers to accept the Voluntary Retirement
Scheme (VRS), the workers refused, he said. "The workers want
employment but the company says that they are not economically sound
to run the factory any longer and did not see any other alternative
other than the VRS," the official said.He added that the Labour
Department is trying to find an equitable solution to resolve the
matter. (RS)
