Military obligated to protect civilians: Jaffna Commander
The new Jaffna Commander Major General Susil Chandrapala after assuming duties invited the top government officials in Jaffna and the LTTE and promised the military co-operation to bring about the normalcy in the daily life of people of Jaffna.

The meeting was attended by Jaffna GA S. Padmanathan, heads of departments, other senior officials and secretaries of Pradreshiya Sabhas. The Jaffna GA explained the difficulties and life related issues faced by Jaffna people through a documentary.

Major General Susil Chandrapala in his speech observed that the importance of arriving at a final solution to overcome the hardships faced by people in Jaffna and emphasised the unitary participation of the military, LTTE and the government departments in restoring normalcy in the peninsula.

He believed that he could expect the same support from the LTTE and the GA similar to what he was able to achieve in Vavunia. He also observed that in the past there had been bitterness between the forces and the LTTE and conflict situations had arisen on several occasions but hereafter he shall take all steps to avoid such situations and offer remedial action.

Meanwhile a new Public Complaint Division has been set up for people in the Jaffna peninsula on the direction of the new Major General to enable people to make their complaints against harm and disruption caused by military personnel.

People in Jaffna could contact the Public Complaint Division, Military camp Palaly by letter or fax no. 011-2541406 and make their complaints in any of three languages.
The move stresses that all the military personnel have to observe and honour in protecting the lives of civilians complying with laws.
