Secs’ strike over

The strike launched by Divisional Secretaries islandwide over the
alleged assault of the Bulathsinhala Divisional Secretary by a Kalutara
district MP was called off on Friday after the Government promised
to meet the demands forwarded by the Sri Lanka Administrative Service
Association.

President S. Ranuge told The Sunday Times that the two demands -
to expedite the legal process against MP Lakshman Wijemanne and
appoint a committee to inquire into the matter - were met by the
Government.
He said the
Attorney General has informed that the case against the MP which
was to be called in May will now be taken up on January 14, 2004
in courts and added that the Government had appointed a three-member
committee to inquire into the case. He added that though there were
problems with regard to the composition and powers of the committee
appointed by the Government, the Prime Minister's secretary had
promised they would be rectified.
People islandwide
were affected by the absence of the Divisional Secretaries while
most functions performed by the clerical staff in Divisional Secretariats
had been held up as the signatures of the officials were required.
Issue of liquor and timber permits and planning and development
functions of Divisional Secretariats had also been held up by the
absence of the Divisional Secretaries while the accounts of the
institutions have to be finalised before December 31. |
