15
countries at LTTE meeting
By Chris Kamalendran
Diplomats of more than 15 countries are due to take part tomorrow
at a Kilinochchi meeting presided over by LTTE political wing leader
S. P. Thamilselvan to discuss development strategies and attract
foreign aid, diplomatic sources said.
The
purpose of the meeting is for Jay Maheswaran, who heads a newly
set-up Planning and Development Secretariat to explain the LTTE's
development programmes to the diplomatic community and donor countries
and to appeal for funds and technical assistance. European Union
countries, including France, Germany, Denmark and The Netherlands
along with Switzerland have confirmed their participation while
India, the United States and Japan have not responded, the sources
said.
This
is the first time the LTTE will be directly outlining its development
plans to the international community after a new wing of the LTTE
was set up two weeks ago to handle development. The details of the
Kilinochchi meeting were announced after the LTTE said it would
not attend a donors meeting to be held in Colombo on Friday, presided
over by Japan's special envoy Yasushi Akashi. However, Mr. Akashi
is expected to visit Kilinochchi on Thursday for talks with Mr.
Thamilselvan.
The
move comes amidst a fresh effort by the international community
to call upon the government and the LTTE to continue with the peace
process. Norwegian envoys recently met LTTE negotiator Anton Balasingham
in London and Mr. Thamilselvan in Kilinochchi to discuss the peace
process and the political crisis in Colombo. |
