CEB
to purchase emergency power?
By Shelani Perera
The CEB is to purchase emergency power from private suppliers in
the wake of a severe drop in the water levels in the hydro power
reservoirs, The Sunday Times learns.
The
water levels have been decreasing within the last few weeks, which
has led the CEB to go for emergency power. The Sunday Times learns
that the Board is to advertise for suppliers within the next two
days.
Emergency
power which has proved to be costly will be an added expense to
the Board. The CEB did purchase emergency power in 2001 and 2002
following a similar power shortage. At present the total power capacity
is 400 GWH, whereas it should be 800 GWH to be out of danger.
Meanwhile
CEB Chairman S Zubair said the water levels are decreasing and the
board is studying all options to overcome the crisis. 'We may consider
purchasing emergency power but the situation is being monitored
every day. Our requirement of water is to supply it for irrigation
purposes not so much for generation' said Mr. Zubair.
Last
week the Water Board warned consumers to use water sparingly or
face a water cut in a few weeks. The Water Board appealed to consumers
to refrain from using water unnecessarily as the water levels in
the Kelani Ganga and the reservoirs have dropped. |
