Slow
cops interdicted
Three policemen attached to the Parliament Police have been interdicted
for failing to apprehend a man who crashed his car on to the barricade
at the main entrance to the Parliamentary Complex in the early hours
of Thursday.
The
incident had occurred around 3.00 a.m. on Thursday when a car driven
at a very high speed from the direction of Kotte had lost control
and crashed on to the barricade blocking the entrance to the legislature.
As a result of the collision, the barricade had been thrown back
several feet but none of the three policemen on duty had been injured.
The
driver of the vehicle, the model of which has not yet been identified,
had reversed the vehicle on to the road and sped off before he could
be stopped. The three policemen on duty had been interdicted on
the grounds that they had failed to open fire and stop the fleeing
vehicle. Although the Talangama and Welikada police stations had
been alerted soon after the incident, they have failed to locate
the vehicle so far.
Brushing
aside
Minister Mahinda Wijesekera has definitely proved that he has no
control over his son’s unruly behaviour. Last week when the
boys were produced in courts over the night club brawl and Minister
Wijesekera had been questioned about his son's behaviour he brushed
them aside by saying ' They go for parties everyday, am I to keep
watch over them, after all they are boys and they do get involved
in such brawls. Even if I am not there they would inform their mother
and go out'.The
minister was brushing aside yet another violent incident involving
one of his sons.
Not
bothered at all
More on the incident where police tried to prevent journalists from
speaking to Minister Wijesekera when he accompanied his son to courts
last Friday. The minister dismissed the cops, went up to the journalists
and sarcastically 'thanked' the media for the 'publicity' given
to him over his son's fight. He even posed for a photograph with
his son and wife. The whole episode proved that Minister Wijesekera
was not the least bothered or affected by the adverse publicity
he had received during the last few months, especially as he has
never been asked to explain and no action has been taken against
him by the higher ups.
Different
styles
A bash in a different style was the way a prominent SLFP parliamentarian
from Katana celebrated his 51st birthday last Sunday in Negombo.
A perahera organised by well-wishers took to the streets not only
causing a major traffic jam but also sound pollution.
The
temple in the area became the venue for invitees, where a popular
TV announcer was entrusted with the task of announcing the names
of those present, which included politicians from the government
and the Opposition much to the amusement of passersby. Meanwhile
a UNF Ex-co member chose a unique way to thank guests for attending
his wedding which was held in July.
Instead
of sending 'thank you' cards he had a list of names of those who
attended the wedding and those who sent messages, printed on a greeting
card. On the card, which had six sides, were the season's greetings
and on three of its sides, the couples' 'thank you' to the guests
who had attended the "Most memorable event of our life - our
marriage".
