President's
trophy at Ridgeways
The weekend at the Ridgeways was loaded with a highly competitive
tournament of 2 stroke play rounds for the Trophies donated by popular
sports personality Norman Gunawardena who is now the President of
the Royal Colombo Golf Club.
After
2nd day's play at lunch time Gunawardena played host to a great
fun filled pre-lunch period closely followed by a classy lunch laced
with great music which quite naturally was studded with the Mylvaganam/Gunawardena
duo - the voices in harmony. Great tournament, exceptionally happy
get together with prizes that were absolutely high class and extravagant.
Carter
Shines
On the opening day Jeremy Carter hit the limelight with a scintillating
4 under par nett 67 the lowest score of the 2 day tournament. A
cold and calculating stroke player Carter hits a helluva good tee
shot and I have got reasons to believe that on the greens or round
them he is masterly on his good days.
He
was a popular winner judging from the applause he received at the
award ceremony happily joined by his supportive wife. Jerome Rajendram
stayed behind with nett 70 beating K. Imeska, Sarath Wickremaratne,
Dilip Kodikara & Bandu Weerasinghe with a better rear nine.
Dharmaratne
Impresses
Lalinda Dharmaratne impressed too with a well calculated nett 68
beating Mithun Nandasena & Steuart Ritchie to pick a handsome
award from President Norman Gunawardena.
Winner
Lalinda Dharmaratne reached the peak award with a good round of
nett 68 and not so good round of 72. With 140 he tied with Binupa
Wijesinghe and just beat Jeremy Carter by one stroke.
Kodikara
Excels
Young Dilip Kodikara struck an excellent round of nett 66 followed
by nett 70 to collect a very special President's award and rush
to the company of cheering friends to celebrate. Extremely popular
Thejan de Silva was all smiles with the wooden spoon or booby prize.
Disaster
Zone
There was a galaxy of scintillating centuries and those who impressed
immensely were Chula Ariyaratne, Vinod Hirdaramani, Mahendra Ambani
and Amiskha Boteju to name a few who relish disaster.
In
the confetti producing area Dammika Ratanayake, S. Weeraratne, Dan
Abeywardena, Upali Wickremaratne and Tissa Jayasinghe packed the
most decorative collections. Concluded a great event conducted with
an excellent address by Norman Gunawardena making reference to the
origin of the President's Award Tournament.
He
paid tribute to the retiring Administrative Secretary Lionel Almeida
who was identified with great service to the club. The rousing applause
was an indication that the membership appreciated the contribution
made by Lionel Almeida. They wished him well. |
