Asian
Tribune stands by Somawansa interview
It has turned out to be the modern day battle of the two Wansas
or clans. It is not over an epic or historic issues. This one is
over crony capitalism. What JVP leader Somawansa Amerasinghe said
to the Asian Tribune -an online news site- is now being denied by
Wimal Weerawansa.
Amerasinghe
said what his party agreed to form after an election victory with
the SLFP was a 'pure capitalist democratic government' in place
of the 'crony and corrupt capitalism run with black money by the
Ranil Wickremesinghe administration in Sri Lanka today'.
He
had said that the true Sri Lankan entrepreneurs would be placed
in an unprecedented advantageous position to develop Sri Lanka to
the fullest possible extent following new Asian leaders like Malaysia,
India and China. The telephone interview done by Los Angeles based
journalist Walter Jayawardhana appeared in the Asian Tribune web
page and was subsequently picked up by other local newspapers.
The
official website of the JVP also picked up the interview and published
it without contradictions, but Weerawansa later denied the report
claiming that it was fabricated by the Government. Mr. Jayawardhana,
responding to reports about the denial had written back to The Asian
Tribune.
He
said "Somawansa Amerasinghe has known him since the April insurrection
of 1971. So I sent him an e-mail requesting a telephone interview.
As I mentioned in my story he gave me a call from his London home
eight hours before his departure. Two or three minutes later he
once again called me. So actually he called me twice"
Many
were to note that same version - the telephone interview with Somawansa
Amerasinghe appeared in the international website of the JVP - www.jvpnet.com.
If anyone is interested kindly browse the JVP website then they
can see for themselves the interview as well as other writings of
Walter Jayawardhana in the website.
'...the
JVP wants to tell the country and the whole world that they are
no more Marxist than Malaysia, India and China who adopted capitalist
method to develop their fast growing economies'.
Talking
more about the crony capitalism in the country under Prime Minister
Ranil Wickremesinghe, Amerasinghe charged that it was black money
earned by narcotic drugs and gambling, as allowed by the budget,
that was being invested in the enterprises.
He
said the new administration that would replace that of Ranil Wickremesinghe
would give those indigenous capitalist class enough opportunity
to reinvigorate their businesses so that they could treat their
employees rightly and produce efficiently.
Speaking
about the economic policies agreed by the two parties under the
agreed alliance Amerasinghe said that the national economy should
be strengthened by investments coming from all parts of the world.
He said since 1978 under the UNP governments the nation had unfortunately
marched, not towards neo colonialism as some say, but towards re-colonization
by certain imperialist powers. He said, Sri Lanka should accept
all good sides of the globalization and reject all the ill effects
of it injurious to the nation.
He
said our economic policies for 26 years under the UNP had been formulated
not for the mutual benefits of the country and the other trading
nations engaged in trade but to the detriment of Sri Lanka. He said
today every Sri Lankan citizen was indebted to about one hundred
thousand rupees to foreign countries.
Under this government national assets were being sold to cronies
for a song, he charged.
