JVP
denies involvement in church attacks
Church kept away from strictly “political event”:
Archbishop
By Harinda Vidanage
The Catholic Church kept away from Tuesday's SLFP-JVP Memorandum
of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony due to the church policy
of refraining from taking part in politically related events, Colombo's
Archbishop Oswald Gomes said.
Archbishop
Gomes told The Sunday Times he chose not to attend the ceremony
because it was purely a political event. He also confirmed that
no written invitation had been received to attend the ceremony,
but only a telephone call.
Meanwhile
The Sunday Times learns, SLFP parliamentarian Susil Premajayantha
was assigned to invite the Archbishop. He had invited the Archbishop
over the phone, but had not sent a written invitation as they did
not have invitations printed.
JVP
Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerwansa reacting to speculation that
the Catholic church avoided the ceremony as it believed that the
JVP was involved in the recent attacks on churches, said that the
party had no connection with these incidents. He said he also did
not believe that the absence of the Christian clergy was nothing
to do with such rumours.
He
said it was the responsibility of two SLFP representatives to invite
the representatives from the Catholic church. Meanwhile The Sunday
Times learns the propaganda committee operating under Mangala Samaraweera
ran into problems when printing posters and leaflets for the function.
Both
parties prepared an "instructions sheet" which was to
be circulated among SLFP and JVP leaders at all levels. However,
only the JVP managed to send them and as a result SLFP supporters
had to take part in JVP organized events.
There
also has been concern among some senior SLFPers that Anura Bandaranaike
had not been invited to light the oil lamp or given a place at the
head table. He was a notable absentee at the following day's joint
SLFP-JVP press conference. |
