Grade
6 textbooks under scrutiny
Education Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku has assured he would
look into the issue of discrepancies in the new Grade 6 textbooks.
He said he would see whether the Ministry-appointed Subject Specialist
Panel had neglected its duties.
"
I will see whether the Panel had neglected its duties or whether
it was sabotage", he said. Under the caption "Hidden page
for privatisation?" The Sunday Times last week pointed out
contradictions in the three textbooks on Sinhala Language published
by three private companies. The article dealt with distortions of
historical facts, discrepancies in the contents and printing mistakes
in the textbooks.
Meanwhile
principals in several schools have complained that Grade 6 students
are still to receive textbooks under the new Multiple Book Option
System. "Students have been badly affected by the delay in
the distribution of new textbooks. They are only managing their
studies with the help of the books provided to the teachers",
a school principal in Embilipitiya said.
Ceylon
Teachers' Union General Secretary Bertie Ranaweerage told The Sunday
Times that most of the schools in the Matugama area have so far
not received textbooks and consequently the students have been affected.
School
principals are maintaining that under the Multiple Book Option system
a student who changes his school could be badly affected since the
textbooks used by schools could be different from each other. |
