Thomians
dumped by the Cambrians
By M. Shamil Amit
Prince of Wales scored the second outright win for the season when
they crushed S. Thomas' by ten wickets in their inter-school cricket
match concluded at Mt Lavinia yesterday.
The
Thomians are having a disastrous season this year and this is their
second successive defeat within a week having earlier lost to Isipathana
by an innings. The Cambrians on the other hand are enjoying a fine
season and stand a chance of finishing on top of the schools points
table.
The
Thomians are playing sans their regular skipper Kaushal Silva and
deputy Videsh Balasubramaniam. They are both included in the Sri
Lanka Under 19 team and are undergoing training for the forthcoming
Under 19 World Cup.
At
the end of the first days play on Friday the match was more in favour
of the Cambrians who sent the Thomians into bat and bundled them
out for a paltry 91 and then made 233 for 9.
Resuming
on day two the Cambrians did not take the field and declared their
innings at their overnight score. The Thomians were left with the
daunting task of batting the whole day or face defeat. Added to
their woes they had no players who had performed well in the earlier
matches.
With
the exception of Sanjeewa Mendis who fought a lone battle in hitting
a fighting 68 comprising eight boundaries and three sixes and Charith
de Silva who remained unbeaten on 40, the other batsmen crumbled
to the effective bowling of the Cambrians and folded up for 165
which gave the Cambrians a simple victory target of 24 runs which
they reached without losing a wicket.
S.
Thomas' 91 and 165 (Sanjeewa Mendis 68, Charith de Silva 40 n.o.;
Srimal Peiris 3 for 30, Pishan Hewage 3 for 37, Dilshan Sampath
2 for 3)
Prince of Wales 233 for 9 declared (Srimal Peiris 52, C. Fernando
59, Amila Sandaruwan 37, Pishan Hewage 35; Rayendra Karunaratne
3 for 43) and 28 for no loss. |
