Consumer
concerns on ads
The Sunday Times FT in collaboration with Sri Lanka's advertising
industry is launching a new column on consumer concerns of some
advertisements. The paper has received many letters from consumers
complaining about advertisements connected with polythene bags,
the use of children, sausages, the environment and so on.
During
a discussion with a group of top advertising personalities last
week, it was agreed that the paper with the assistance of the 4As,
the industry's main professional body, will channel all complaints
or comments from consumers to the respective advertising agency
or marketer for a response.
Advertising
industry officials also expressed concern that the new effort to
bring some professionalism and social responsibility in the industry
could trigger a heap of unfair complaints against the industry.
The Sunday Times agrees with this view and appeals to its readers
to raise issues only if advertisements are seen in bad taste, makes
false claims or are harmful to public sensibilities and public health.
The
first column will appear on Sunday, February 15. Sent your questions,
concerns or comments to the Business Editor, The Sunday Times, 8,
Hunupitiya Cross Road, Colombo 2 or email: ft@sundaytimes.wnl.lk |
