The day draws near

The countdown is on, the excitement is catching up, and if you still haven’t got your ticket, you should be rushing to get it! The gig of the year is on: Bryan Adams will perform at Colombo’s CR&FC grounds on February 10 at 8 p.m. in a concert that promises to ‘explode the night’.

Born on November 5, 1959, the Canadian artiste has had phenomenal success worldwide. He was performing with a local Vancouver group when he met Jim Vallance in 1977, and formed a song-writing partnership that still stands today, and has seen immense success with the lyrics of the 1983 hit Cuts Like a Knife and the phenomenal party track Summer of ’69, as well as Heaven and his first top ten hit Straight from the Heart.

Adams’ label debut with A&M Canada, who signed him and Valance in 1978, was a dance single titled Let me take you dancing, but was not included in their debut album. Adams’ first major hit came with 1983’s Straight from the Heart off his third album Cuts Like a Knife. It was followed in 1984 by the quintuple-platinum Reckless, which held the No. 1 slot for two weeks and held a staggering six top 20 singles including Adams’ first No. 1 single, Heaven, which he co-wrote with Vallance and is also found on the soundtrack to 20th Century Fox’s 1983 film A Night In Heaven.

With his next album failing to turn out as much success as Reckless, Adams returned in full throttle with the 1991 Number 1 hit (Everything I do) I do it for you, from the film Prince Of Thieves. The song was the biggest-selling single in the history of A&M Records. International success followed with the 1995 Number 1 hit Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman? soundtrack for The Three Musketeers. On a day like today was released in 1998, as was Cloud # 9, taken off the same album.

In 2000, to commemorate 22 years of songwriting and performing, Adams released an album titled The Best of Me which contains most of the artiste’s top hits. His latest album of songs inclusive of the track Here I am was released in 2002 from the Dreamworks Animated film Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimmaron.

The Lankan gig Bryan Adams Concert for Peace, presented by Showdiff Worldwide and Rapport Global Events, is facilitated by the Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. Tickets are priced at Rs.1000, 3000 and 5000.

The concert will see Bryan Adams, complete with his usual band with Keith Scott on guitar and Mickey Curry on drums. With exactly nine days to go to be on Cloud Number Nine, and a show that promises the Best of Adams, you really should be rushing to get your ticket. Tickets are available at Crescat Boulevard Food Court, Deli France (Crescat and Odel), CR&FC, The Colombo Plaza and Pizza Hut. Print media sponsors for the concert are The Sunday Times, the Daily Mirror, Lankadeepa, Hi!! Magazine, with SunFM and GoldFM together with ARTTV as official electronic media sponsors. Jetwing Hotels are official travel, while the artiste and his entourage will be hosted by The Colombo Plaza and Crescat City Residencies.
