CBK
to meet Chief Ministers tomorrow
By Shelani Perera
President Chandrika Kumaratunga has summoned Chief Ministers of
the seven provinces tomorrow (February 2) a day prior to amendments
to the Provincial Councils are to be presented in Parliament.
The
three amendments will call for Provincial Council Elections to be
held on a single day, the polls to be held on a Saturday and not
to change the existing number of members in the Councils.
The
Sunday Times learns that President Kumaratunga is to draft the letters
to be sent to the Governors to dissolve the Councils by February
8, when the Wayamba PC term lapses.
While
the Wayamba Council will be dissolved by February 8, the terms of
the Western Province, Central Province, North Central Province,
Uva and Samabaragamuwa Provinces will lapse in April. The Southern
Provincial Council's term will end in July.
Once
the amendments are passed in Parliament the elections will be held
on the last week of April. Last week Government Spokesman G.L. Peiris
at the weekly Cabinet briefing said the Bill will be presented as
urgent in the House on Tuesday. President Kumaratunga on Wednesday
presented the Bill to the Supreme Court, where an answer was sought,
either within 24 hours or within three days. |
