LTTE
seeks direct foreign aid
An LTTE delegation is on a seven-nation European tour mainly focused
on attracting direct foreign aid for rehabilitation and reconstruction
projects in the north and east.
The
delegation led by LTTE Political Wing Leader S.P. Thamilselvan has
already held talks in Norway with Foreign Minister Jan Petersen,
Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen and Special Envoy Erik Solheim,
urging urging direct financial assistance for development work in
the north and east.
The
LTTE delegation which also includes its Peace Secretariat Chief
Pulithevan had claimed that almost two years after the signing of
the cease-fire agreement, the people in the north and east had got
little by way of a peace dividend.
They
complained that high security zones still remain, preventing thousands
of people from returning to their homes. The LTTE wants the donor
countries to release funds for humanitarian needs through NGOs and
international organisations working in the north and east as the
government mechanism of carrying rehabilitation work was not working
due to the political crisis.
The
LTTE delegation will also visit Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland,
Italy and The Netherlands for discussions with foreign ministry
officials of those countries. Minister, Milinda Moragoda was also
on a visit to Sweden where he met with Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds
on Friday and briefed her on the current situation in Sri Lanka.
A spokesman for Minister Moragoda said he would not be be meeting
the LTTE delegation. |
