Somawansa
dismisses LTTE proposals as non-negotiable
In his interview with ITN telecast last night, JVP leader Somawansa
Amarasinghe said the LTTE's proposals for a negotiated settlement
were "non-negotiable" and not a document worthy of consideration
by anyone.
He
said the peace process was inoperative since April last year when
the LTTE suspended talks, and that the only solution that the new
SLFP-JVP alliance should offer to the LTTE was " democracy
and equality ".
He
told the one-to-one programme that the Alliance was "historic"
purely because for the first time in Sri Lanka's history two parties
had got together "agreeing to disagree" on some aspects
- that of power-sharing with the LTTE.
He
accused the UNF Government and the so-called independent media of
highlighting only these differences. The JVP leader evaded the question
on whether there were secret clauses in the MoU signed last week,
asking whether Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe did not sign
a secret MoU with the LTTE.
He
said the JVP was for a mixed-economy and asked the UNP to name one
country or one company that had stated it did not want to do business
with the JVP. On the contrary, he said, it was some UNP Ministers
who were chasing foreign investors away by asking for 15 percent
commissions.
Asked
whether he was going back to London where he has been since 1989,
or would stay back in Sri Lanka, he said that was a decision for
his party to take. |
