Call
to save Galle Fort heritage
The Galle Fort World Heritage Protection Society at a meeting last
week passed several resolutions in a bid to preserve and safeguard
the heritage and the archaeological values at the site.
The
Society has called for a stop to the sale of Government heritage
buildings and properties and construction and renovation of houses
and buildings contravening the heritage and archaeological designs,
concept and laws.
The
Society has also made a request for two representatives from among
Galle Fort residents to be nominated to the Galle Fort World Heritage
Foundation Committee.
The
Society points out that the Prime Minister's decision in trying
to make Galle Fort a tourist destination is short-sighted as it
will only encourage immorality and bring destruction and devastation
to the Fort and Galle.
"Culture,
religion and education should be protected under all circumstances.
Tourism does not mean selling the world heritage sites, Government
and private properties to foreigners' it said. The Society states
it will appeal to the Tourism Minister to cancel all illegal liquor
licences. Liquor bars have been opened near churches and schools,
which contravenes the law, it states. |
