Nine parties already in the election fray
Nine political parties have already submitted their nominations to contest the general elections on April 2 while 46 independent groups representing 16 districts have deposited money for nominations.

The country's two main political parties UNF and UPFA which were in the process of preparing their nominations will submit their nominations on February 23 and 24.

The Jathika Hela Urumaya, Sinhalaye Mahasammatha Bhoomiputra Party, National Development Front, United Socialist Alliance, Sri Lanka Progressive Front, New Left Front, Ruhunu Janatha Party, the Liberal Party and Sri Lanka National Front have submitted nominations to the Elections Commissioner.

Five independent groups from the Puttalam district and two from Kandy have deposited money for nominations.Independent groups from Digamadulla, Moneragala, Nuwara Eliya, and Wanni districts have also made deposits.
