Extension
for Police Chief illegal?
Inspector General of Police Indra De Silva was granted an extension
of six months more in the Police Department's top job amidst strong
differences on its legality between President Chandrika Kumaratunga
and the government.
The
Chairman of the Constitutional Council Joseph Michael Perera described
the extension as an "illegal arrangement" but said the
CC had no powers to intervene in such a situation.
Mr.
De Silva reached 60 years, the mandatory age of retirement last
week and was looking to retire but was informed in writing by the
President that he was being granted six more months in office.
