OPA
concerned over bhikkus contesting polls
In an appeal to Buddhist clergy the Organization of Professional
Associations (OPA) of Sri Lanka, has expressed its deep concern
over the decision of the Buddhist clergy to contest the forthcoming
elections and requested them to abstain from carrying out their
decision.
In
the statement OPA President Parakrama Karunaratne said the decision
will have serious and detrimental results not only to Buddhism but
also to the people, irrespective of their religious faiths.
It
said that as Buddhism is the heritage of all Sri Lankans, it is
the obligation of all citizens to protect Buddhism and that the
decision if carried through would lead to serious erosion of faith
in Buddhism.
It
said at present the people are divided on many issues and further
divisions based on religious belief would lead the country to anarchy.
It further stated that not only the Buddhist clergy but also the
clergy of other religions have a greater role to play in rebuilding
the nation.
It
is the duty of the clergy to act as advisers to the people and especially
to politicians and also to direct the course of the country to prosperity
and peace to ensure a nation of healthy minded people, the statement
further said. |
