LSSP
opposes UPFA plan for new constitution
By Harinda Vidanage
LSSP leader Batty Weerakoon warned yesterday that plans by the UPFA
to introduce a new constitution without the support of other parties
might cause serious problems.
Mr.
Weerakoon whose party first opposed but is now going along with
UPFA, said he believed parliament could convert into a constituent
assembly only with the full consensus of the main political parties
in parliament or through a revolution like in France.
Mr.
Weerakoon, a top lawyer and former justice minister, said he believed
the UPFA could not form a constituent assembly to change the constitution
with a simple majority or without the consent of other parties in
parliament.
He
warned that if the UPFA went ahead with this move, it could precipitate
a parliamentary crisis and social tension. |
