Thousands
suffer as doctors’ strike goes on; talks today
By Santhush Fernando
As hundreds of thousands of poor patients continue to suffer with
the doctors' strike entering its fifth day, the GMOA will hold another
round of crisis talks today with Finance Minister K.N. Choksy and
top officials.
The
GMOA held talks with Mr. Choksy on Friday in a bid to sort out their
demand for a salary hike but the talks failed with the Finance Minister
saying a caretaker government could give no firm commitment.
GMOA
spokesman Dr. Chanaka Perera said they would pull out of even emergency
services and resign from their posts in the public service if the
issue was not resovled.
The
doctors are asking for another salary hike in line with the increase
given to other health workers last month, but the Health Service
Trade Union Alliance has warned it will go on strike if the doctors
are given another hike. |
