From
SB to CBK: A billion-rupee letter of demand
Samurdhi Minister S B Dissanayake's lawyers have sent a letter of
demand to President Chandrika Kumaratunga for Rs. 1,000 million
for accusing the minister of plundering 2 billion rupees from savings
of Samurdhi beneficiaries, while the ministry was under him.
The
letter of demand was sent to President Kumaratunga on Friday by
Minister Dissanayake's lawyers Samararatna Associates. The letter
of demand states that President Kumaratunga had made the defamatory
statement at a public meeting held at Ragama.
“Our
client has instructed us that during the election campaign leading
to the 2001 Parliamentary Election, you took over the functions
of the Samurdhi Ministry and even appointed a Secretary to the said
Ministry.
“Thereafter
a complaint was made to the Commission to inquire into allegations
of bribery and corruption. The Bribery and Corruption Commission
conducted a full inquiry into this complaint and exonerated our
client” it said.
The
legal action is to be taken when the President ceases to hold office
as President of Sri Lanka and thereby loses immunity from legal
proceedings the President enjoys at present. |
