Mud-war
within LTTE leadership
By Chris Kamalendran in Batticaloa
As the rivalry between the LTTE's Wanni leadership and the rebel
Karuna faction deepened, the two sides have begun exposing alleged
scandals about each other.
The
Sunday Times learns that the Wanni leadership is to make charges
against Karuna, relating to misuse of funds for family purposes,
an attempt to buy a ship from Thailand and trying to forge direct
links with the Army.
In
response, Karuna's faction is throwing counter-allegations of the
LTTE's Wanni leadership misusing funds to have luxury lives while
neglecting the cadres in the Eastern Province.
According
to Wanni sources, the charge is that Karuna attempted to purchase
a ship while he was in Thailand for peace talks. The charges against
Karuna are seen as an attempt by the Wanni leadership to make him
unpopular among his cadres.
Meanwhile,
attempts by Batticaloa Bishop Kingsley Swampillai to resolve the
crisis apparently failed with Karuna reportedly refusing to send
a delegation for talks with the leaders in the Wanni.
Karuna
told The Sunday Times he was not willing to accept any amnesty from
the LTTE leadership and wanted to function as a separate group in
the east.
He
said he would no longer have LTTE 'courts' and 'police stations'
operating in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts and instead would
have reconciliation boards.
He
said he planned to maintain close co-operation with the security
forces and would ensure that no abductions, killings or extortion
took place. |
