Cambrians
run out of time
By Saif Izzadeen
Cambrians almost pulled off the biggest surprise for the season
when they had St. Sebastians' fighting for survival at 87 for 7
when bad light came to their rescue in the 54th Battle of the Golds
at the De Zoysa Stadium yesterday.
Prince
of Wales who last won under Premalal Fernando way back in 1977,
pulled out every trick out of their bag using six bowlers to beat
the strong St. Sebastians' outfit, but failed. The bad-light came
with 4.3 overs to spare with three St. Sebastian wickets remaining.
Earlier
Prince of Wales taking the first lease of the wicket made 173 for
9 declared with D. Sampath ( 39 ), D. Samarasinghe (36) and A. Sandaruwan
( 25 ) being the main contributors. In reply St. Sebastians' made
only120 runs with D. Sampath coming into the limelight again with
figures of 4 for 26.
Batting
for the second time, Prince of Wales were shot out for 121 with
left armer Dunell Abeydheera 3 for 46 and Lahiru Anthony 4 for 29
doing the damage.
Chasing
a target of 175 to win in 41 overs St. Sebastians were never in
the race as left arm leg spinner Nisal Withanage who claimed 5 for
29 proving unplayable. Ironically Withanage lacked the much needed
support at the other end. |
