A
ticket to enjoyment
By Marisa de Silva
You can literally 'Drift Away' into the wonderful
world of music when the Peterite Chorale entertains generations
of music lovers, at their performance 'A Decade Together
Forever',
at 7 p.m. on March 27 and 28 at the Lionel Wendt. The performance
marks the 10th Anniversary of the Chorale. The Senior Choir of Holy
Family Convent will also make a guest appearance at this concert,
the proceeds of which will be in aid of the Hope Cancer Hospital.
Directed
by Stefan Corera, the Peterite Chorale has grown both in strength
and number over the years, and has much to offer the music loving
community. Harmony is by far their specialty in singing pieces from
all eras. This concert will be a unique blend of light classics
and choral pop that will cater to both the young and 'not so young'
alike.
Popular
chart toppers from the past like Billy Joel's 'Uptown Girl', the
Beatles' 'Ticket to Ride', 'I Get Around' by the Beach Boys, The
Platters' 'Only You' and 'Bye, Bye Blackbird' are sure to be hits.
The harmonies and upbeat arrangements that, in keeping with the
original versions, with a little something different to it, help
make the songs unique.
Songs
from modern and all time classic musicals like 'Get Me to the Church
on Time' from My Fair Lady and 'Bring Him Home' from Les Miserables
are sung with a lot of passion and soul. The smooth, long lines
that flow from one to another with ease give these songs, especially
the latter, a sense of depth and feeling that is effectively conveyed
to the audience.
'Circle
of Life' from Lion King is a definite highlight of the show. The
tribal sounding chants and the raw, open sounds of this song in
contrast to the rounded, harmonious sounds (almost like Barbershop
harmony) of the previous ones, show the versatility of the choir
and the extent of their range.
The
beautiful non-denominational hymn 'Bless this House', published
in 1927 by two English women, Helen Taylor and Mary Brahe, who wrote
the original words and composed this hymn, respectively, is sung
by the chorale keeping its prayerful mood well intact. This stirring,
devotional hymn generates a sense of peace and calm that tends to
catch on to its listeners as well.
The
Holy Family Choir, directed by Soundarie David hopes to do a few
numbers ranging from Schubert to Sinatra to modern musicals. The
songs set to be performed jointly by both choirs are sure to be
a huge success. 'Oh, When The Saints' is the number that's tipped
to bring the show to an exhilarating close.
Stefan
said of the Familian Choir that they were very lucky and glad as
an all male choir to have a 'sister choir', on par with them to
support them by way of female voices.
Neomal
and Yohan de Alwis will accompany the chorale on piano, with Christopher
Prins joining in on drums.
Brought
together through fellowship and a love for music, the Peterite Chorale
look back on their 10 years as a choral group with pride. And they
invite you to come experience this reality for yourself.
Tickets
are available at the Lionel Wendt. Media sponsors for this concert
are the Sunday Times, TNL Lite and ARTv.
Learning to curry it
March 21, 2004
To all my friends,
It
is just over a month since I left the shore of the little island
where we shared our many moments of laughter and those of tears,
of victory and graceful defeat. I am already missing your company
and the good times we had. But honestly, that is the least of my
concerns right now. I have been lying around in this land of high
spending for over a month without a job and like a crab in a cauldron,
I am beginning to feel the "heat" a bit.
Getting
a job is not going to be easy. So being the entrepreneur that I
am, I have decided to make use of my newly acquired skills in culinary
art and computers, to conduct cookery lessons over the Internet
for those of you who are aspiring to become professional level cooks
one day. But let me remind you that the course is open for amateurs
as well, so don't worry because I was a novice in the field just
a few weeks ago!
I
understand that there are those of you who are sceptical about this.
So I thought I will give a "no risk" "try-this-before-you-buy-this"
cookery lesson this week, with supreme confidence that it will clear
all doubts and make you sign up for classes immediately. The recipe
(as I tried it once) is as follows:
Italian
Chicken
Take
as many chicken thighs as you wish to eat and marinate them for
five minutes (if you are really hungry) to an hour (if your hunger
permits to leave them uncooked for so long) with chopped garlic,
ginger, pepper and salt. Then coat the chicken with flour and deep-fry
them in oil till their colour turns golden brown with large spots
of black. This is the point where the bird crosses some borders
and swims across oceans into becoming a "not so Italian"
chicken, but that should be the least of your concerns. It is time
to think of how you are going to digest this thing you've cooked,
without ending up in hospital, and figure out whether your insurance
covers 'food poisoning'. You can improve things by boiling some
chicken stock with Worcestershire sauce and when the gravy is thick,
mix it with the chicken parts. Scrape off the burnt parts and feast
on it with boiled carrots, mashed potatoes and bread.
That
is not all! At the end of every lesson, I will be sharing with you
"Words of wisdom from a cook book" and much more. It is
amazing how both amateur cooks and professional chefs start with
the same recipe, then both parties improvise in the middle only
to differ so drastically when it comes to the "finished product".
No
matter! I've got the infrastructure in place to conduct lessons
now; a web camera and microphone, but there is no way I can take
them all to one place in the kitchen at the moment. Instead I am
planing to install a gas cooker, oven, sink and pantry cupboards
in my bedroom - right in front of my computer. I will let you know
as soon as they are in place. Once that is done, all you have to
do is sign up with your dad's credit card and all your favourite
dishes will be just a mouse click away. Awaiting a favourable response,
I will forever be,
Yours
truly,
