UPFA
sends emissary to Karuna
The UPFA has sought the services of a PLOTE cadre, closely associated
with the military, to establish a link with the rebel Karuna faction
ahead of the elections, The Sunday Times learns.
But
President Kumaratunga in an interview with the foreign media denied
that they were trying to establish links with Karuna.
The
Sunday Times, however, learns that the PLOTE cadre identified as
"Plot Mohan", a resident of Wellawatte, went to Batticaloa
in a government helicopter to meet Karuna with a message from the
UPFA leadership.
He
was unable to meet Karuna but despite denials from Karuna's spokesman
Varathan that no contacts were being established with President
Kumaratunga, "Plot Mohan" is learnt to have met some of
Karuna's deputies and according to sources "is still working
on it." |
