is Police Commemoration Day
Official ceremonies at Field Force

The Police Commemoration Day will be held today (March 21) at the
Police Field Force headquarters, Havelock Road, Colombo. The 140th
commemoration would remember the 2,684 police personnel who have
laid down their lives in the performance of their duties since the
first death in the line of duty by police constable Sabhan of the
then Ceylon Police on March 21, 1884. Sabhan was shot dead at Mawanella
by Mamala Marikkar, an accomplice of the notorious criminal Saradiel.
Inspector
General of Police, Indra de Silva will take part in the official
ceremonies which will be held in front of the commemorative monument
at Havelock Road.
"It
is with a deep sense of genuine gratitude, reverence, appreciation
and love that the Police Service remember and honour their heroes
every year. The dedicated lives and the heroic deaths of our comrades
will continue to inspire us to serve our country as they did, without
counting cost", says a statement issued by the Police Field
Force headquarters.
The
police personnel attached to the Special Task Force will use the
occasion to commemorate the sacrifice made by police personnel who
lost their lives in countering terrorism in the North and East. |
