Pradeep
Kumara, Susanthika confirmed as captains
It was stated in certain quarters that controversial sprinter Rohan
Pradeep Kumara had been picked to captain the overall Sri Lankan
contingent for the forthcoming South Asian Federation Games (SAFG)
in Islamabad, Michael Karunatilleke of the National Olympic Committee
denied that there were moves to make Kumara the captain.
Susanthika
Jayasinghe, by virtue of her past performances has been appointed
as the overall captain, and Rohan Pradeep Kumara has been appointed
as the athletics captain. This was confirmed by Prema Pinnawela,
Secretary, Amateur Athletic Association (AAA). He also mentioned
that there will be 3 or 4 batches leaving for the SAF Games. The
first batch will leave on March 25.
"We
hope to get about 9 to 10 gold medals", added Pinnawela, about
the hopes expressed at the SAF games. We should get at least 2 medals
in swimming, 1 in Karate, one in shooting, one in boxing".
said Pinnawela, reverting back to the core issue in question. Pradeep
Rohana will leave with the second contingent on the 30th of March,
and not with the first one on the 25th." Added Pinnawela.
As
regards the early departure of the first batch is that they needed
time to acclimatize themselves with the conditions in Pakistan and
that is why they are leaving earlier than the others, the IOC sources
commented. |
