Arjuna
hits out on sports portfolio
By Leonard Ratnayake
Sri Lanka's World Cup winning cricket captain Arujuna Ranatunga
yesterday expressed disappointment that he had not been given the
job of Sports Minister.
"I
entered politics with the expectation that I would be of some service
to sports. I expected the Sports Ministry portfolio," Mr. Ranatunga
told The Sunday Times yesterday.
Instead
he was offered a post as Deputy Minister of Industries, Tourism
and Investment Promotion under Anura Bandaranaike. The cricket star
did not turn up for the swearing-in of Deputy Ministers and he said
yesterday he had not yet decided whether to take up the Deputy Minstership.
Mr.
Ranatunga has been an MP for two years and SLFP sources said yesterday
much more senior party members had to be given preference over him.
The Sports portfolio was given to Jeevan Kumaratunga. |
