Citizens'
body praises conduct of polls
The Citizens' Movement for Good Governance had recorded its appreciation
of the conduct of the General Election. 'During the pre-election
period there was widespread apprehension that the election would
be marred by violence and irregularity to a degree that would greatly
distort the people's verdict. What we saw on the contrary, was an
ambience of peace and orderliness unprecedented in the recent past,
a statement from CIMOGG said.
The
statement said that April 2nd, 2004 should prove a watershed date
in our politics, since the people have demonstrated that there will
no longer be toleration of, or compromise with thuggery, violence
or manipulation at elections.
Special
buses, trains for the New Year
Around 1200 buses have been deployed to all parts of the island
for the New Year, despite the fact that after the change of government,
some workers have been still reluctant to report to work, Chief
Operations Manager of SLCTB W.H. Gunatillake said.
With
buses being used to provide special bus services to the outstations
some inconvenience may be caused to commuters in Colombo and the
suburbs. 'To some extent it might cause difficulties to commuters
in Colombo and the suburbs', Mr. Gunatillake said.
Meanwhile,
special train services have also been arranged, General Manager
of Railways Priyal De Silva said.
Business
Council hails Alliance victory
The Sri-Lanka China Business Council (SLCBC), affiliated to the
National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka has praised the victory
of the UPFA at the elections and asked its leaders not to forget
their election promises.
It
said the victory of the UPFA was a step in the 'right direction'.
The Council has dispatched a message of congratulations to the newly
appointed Prime Minister.
The
Council said it requests the newly elected Parliamentarians on both
sides to set an example to the rest of the country. The SLCBC has
called upon the Freedom Alliance leaders not to forget their election
pledges. |
