Former
Cabinet Ministers also lost their seats
At least fifty former Members of Parliament including two Cabinet
Minister and several non Cabinet Ministers were among those who
lost their seats in Parliament at the April 2 general elections.
The
losers included 26 from the United National Party (UNP), 14 from
the People's Alliance (PA) eight from the JVP and two from the Muslim
Congress who were MPs from December 2001 to February, 2004.
The
two Cabinet Ministers who lost were Education and Cultural Affairs
Minister Karunasena Kodituwakku and Southern Development Minister
Ananda Kularatne. Deputy Chairman of Commitees Siri Andrahennadi
from Hambantota too lost his seat.
The
Non Cabinet and deputy ministers who lost were Lal Gamage (Minister
Assisting Foreign Affairs), H.G.P. Nelson (Irrigation), Jayatilleke
Podinilame (North-Western Region Development), R.A.D.Sirisena (Samurdhi),
Upali Piyasoma (Transport), Suranimala Rajapakse (School Education),
and Noordeen Mashoor (Minister Assisting Vanni Development). The
other UNPers who lost are Jayantha Ketagoda (Colombo) Olitha Premathiratne,
(Gampaha), P.D. Abeyratne (Kalutara) Lakshman Wijemanne ( Kalutara)
K.K. Piyadasa (Nuwara Eliya), Ananda Abeywickrema (Galle) Jayantha
Jayaweera (Galle), Justin Galappathi (Matara), A.M. Mohamed Maharoof
(Trincomalee) Thideer Thawfeek (Trincomalee), Sugath Tissera (Puttalam),
Sydney Jayaratne (Polonnaruwa) and Anura Gopallawa (Kurunegala).
The PA members who lost were Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra (Colombo)
Chandana Kathiriarachchi (Colombo), Sarana Gunawardene (Gampaha)
Reggie Ranatunga (Gampaha), Neil Rupasinghe (Gampaha), Tudor Dayaratne
(Kalutara), S.B.Yalegama, (Matale), Kumar Dassanayake ( Nuwara Eliya)
Baddegama Samitha Thero (Galle), M.L.M. Hisbullah (Batticaloa),
M.K.D.S.Gunawardene (Trincomalee), Soma Kumari Tennekoon (Kurunegala)
Asoka Jayawardene (Ratnapura), and Ananda Sarath Kumara (Polonnruwa).
N. Anandasangaree (Ind.) from the Jaffna distirct, N. Mathanarajah
(EPDP), Ariyanayagam Chandra Nehru (Digamadulla) and SLMC member
H.M.M. Harees (Digamadulla) were the others who lost their seats.
There were also several former parliamentarians who did not contest
at the 2004 general election. |
