LTTE
reopens ‘courts’, ‘police stations’ in east
By Chris Kamalendran
The LTTE yesterday declared that it would be reopening its Batticaloa
district 'police stations' and 'law courts' which were closed last
month on the instructions of deposed regional military wing leader,
Karuna.
Thambirajah
Ramesh, who has succeeded Karuna as the Special Forces Commander
for Ampara and Batticaloa, last evening told journalists that the
courts and police stations were being reopened to maintain law and
order in the LTTE-controlled areas of the east.
At
least six police stations and the courts in the east were closed
down by Karuna and dozens of people in detention were released.
Meanwhile, LTTE's Ampara-Batticaloa political wing leader Kaushalyan
met Batticaloa-based northern businessmen and told them that the
LTTE would suspend collection of taxes until its 'financial section'
was restructured.
He
said the businessmen would also be given a grace period to pay 'taxes'
as their business activities had been affected. Hundreds of northern
businessmen operating in Batticaloa had fled the east on the orders
of Karuna after a Tamil Alliance candidate, Rajan Sathyamoorthy,
believed to be a loyalist of Karuna, was shot dead. |
