- King
Valagamba
King
Lajji-Tissa reconciled with the priests and began to follow Buddhist
principles. The doors of the palace were open to the priests.
Alms were offered to them. The king started renovating the Buddhist
shrines. He leveled the area between Ruwanveli Chetiya and Thuparamaya.
- Tradition
continues: Moonstones in Polonnaruwa
The high quality of Sinhalese architecture and sculpture continued
when Polonnaruwa became the capital of Sri Lanka after Anuradhapura.
In fact, some of the religious monuments were more impressive
than those in Anuradhapura.
- Vesak
Vesak Vesak
My parents
suggested that it would be a good idea for the four of us to observe
the eight precepts on Vesak full moon day. But we had other plans.
I wanted to make a ‘star’ lantern. Kamani wanted to
make an octagonal one.
- Vesak
– the thrice blessed day
Vesak commemorates the Birth, Enlightenment and the Passing away
of the Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Every year, Vesak is celebrated
on the full moon Poya day in the month of May. This year Vesak
Pura Pasalikvaka Poya falls on Tuesday, 4 May.
