Awaragira
for a short release

After
nine years Lester James Peries’ ‘Awaragira’ (The
Sun Set) will be released at the Regal in Colombo and nine other
CEL circuit cinemas for a short release of two weeks. The film will
be screened from May 14 to 27.
Based
on G. B. Senanayake’s award winning Best novel at the State
Literary Festival in 1974 the story revolves around the theme of
a family struggle. Woven around a family of three children two sons
and a daughter, Awaragira depicts subtle issues that crop up in
a family with children who want to raise their own families.
‘Awaragira’
won four awards; Best Actress for Irangani Serasinghe, Best Supporting
actress for Wasanathi Chathurani, Best Art Director and Best Canera
at Sarasavi film festival 1996 and mentioned at Fukoka International
Film Festival and Cairo International Film Festivals in 1996.
The
film stars Joe Abeywickrema, Irangani Serasinghe, Wasanthi Chathurani,
Kamal Addararachchi, Lucky Dias and Rathna Lalani Jayakody. Tony
Ranasingha wrote the screenplay while Donald Karunaratne handled
the camera. Music is by Premasiri Khemadasa. Awaragira was produced
by Dilman Jayaratne for Dil Films.
‘Awaragira’
would be followed by Senesh Bandara’s maiden film ‘Adaraneeya
Wassane’. The film was made based on Upul Shantha Sannassgala’s
‘Wassane Sihinaya’. |
