Magic
and Mayhem
By Natasha Fernandopulle
“Magic and Mayhem” a play performed by the Yolande School
of Speech and Drama will go on the boards at the Lionel Wendt Theatre
on 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th June, at 7pm.
The
programme is “devised to accommodate a large cast of enthusiastic
students between the ages of 6 to 18 years”, says the director,
Samantha Abeywira de Soysa. An alternate cast system will be adopted
in order to accommodate and give as much exposure to the students.
The two casts A and B perform on alternate nights.
The
play is enacted mostly in the present day. The first half of the
programme consists of choral items and excerpts from playlets. It
will be accompanied by music and dancing. The spooky adaptation
of a well known legend will mark the end of the first half, with
a musical interlude.
In
the second half, a cast of about 90 students, gaily sing and dance
their way through a “cheeky, chirpy, exuberant, magical musical”.
In order to shed their self-consciousness and give them more confidence,
the youngest children, will perform in large groups. The lead roles
are taken by senior Yolande School students, who have taken part
in previous productions.
The
choreography is by Oosha Saravanamuttu and the music is directed
by Soundarie David. The costumes will be done by Michael Wijesuriya,
Mitabi Gunawardena and Sharmila Fernando. A few selected members
of the Holy Family Convent choir and some of Oosha Saravanamuttu’s
senior ballet dancers will add to the evening’s entertainment.
Indu Dharmasena makes a surprise guest appearance. |
