A
different kind of glow
‘Naked’
at the Glow: The name in itself conjures up visions of graphic intensity.
However, you will not witness musicians strut their stuff in the
buff at one of Colombo’s favourite watering holes - at least
we hope not!
Instead
you will experience some of Colombo’s best known talent, who
have opted to unplug their guitars and leave their amps at home,
strip-down both originals and covers and present them to you as
you’ve never heard them before. The line up comprises Ranil
and Azlan (Kreb Cycle), Anil (Independent Square), Billy (Ezra),
Aadhil and Oshan (The Brass Monkey Band), Penny Ferdinand, Chamath
and debutant Leah Marrikar.
The
organisers of ‘Naked’ say that there are many reasons
as to why they’ve initiated an effort of this nature. “We
want to give the audience a taste of the softer side of loud music.
We’d also like to provide a platform for musicians from all
genres to come together and perform on the same stage.”
‘Naked’
will be a concert with many novel features. For the first time in
the country, the performers at ‘Naked’ will cover each
others’ original singles. In addition to the box guitars,
the ensemble will include horns, cellos and a dedicated percussion
section providing an unusual euphonic experience.
Commenting
on the event Anil said, “It’s always great to play in
a totally different surrounding. While it’s great to be on
stage with your band, to be on stage with so many different musicians
from so many different musical backgrounds is really great, you
always end up learning from each other. I also like the fact that
with events such as these people get to hear music from all genres.”
Ranil
maintains, “Working with different musicians is always very
exciting. I believe that to be progressive, there has to be more
collaboration between musicians. As much as I believe in the concept
of the band and acknowledge its value, I don’t subscribe to
the archaic notion of restricting one’s options by refusing
to move beyond a specific band or genre.”
“It’s
great to be playing with a collection of such talented people,”
says Adhil. “There’s a whole lot that we can learn from
each other. I think it’s very important for musicians to experiment,
trying out and being exposed to new music. Working with people who
are not a part of your regular band helps to keep you open-minded
and receptive to a host of sounds,” he added.
