Kadir
to meet new Indian leaders
Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar is to make another visit to
India next week, this time to meet leaders of the newly-elected
Congress coalition Government.
It
will be his second visit in a month. The first came amidst the height
of the Indian Parliamentary elections. Mr Kadirgamar visited New
Delhi for a meeting with then Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha of
the ousted BJP government and he urged India to play a direct role
in the peace process with the LTTE.
The
latest visit to New Delhi, planned even before a new Indian Foreign
Minister has been sworn in, will come when Mr. Kadirgamar is en
route to Colombo after a trip to Brussels. He is traveling there
to meet European Union External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten.
Earlier,
he was also to visit London for a meeting with Foreign Secretary
Jack Straw. However, Mr. Straw had cancelled the engagement since
British Prime Minister Tony Blair had asked him to travel to Brussels
on an official engagement.
Besides
meeting Yashwant Sinha, Mr. Kadirgamar also met India's National
Security Advisor Brijesh Mishra. Whilst Mr. Sinha lost his own seat
during the polls, Mr. Mishra has lost his job.
The
latest visit to New Delhi is to forge close ties with the newly-elected
Congress-led Government of Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. Mr Kadirgamar
has sought a meeting with the new Indian Foreign Minister. The Sri
Lanka High Commission in New Delhi has been told to make the necessary
arrangements.
This
will be Mr. Kadirgamar's third foreign visit out of the four allowed
to Cabinet Ministers under the JVP promoted strict Presidential
Code of Ethics for UPFA Ministers. Earlier, Mr. Kadirgamar paid
a joint visit to China and India. Later, he made a visit to the
United States. |
