Speaker
in no hurry to robe
Some eyebrows were raised when Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara walked
into the Chambers of Parliament without the official robe traditionally
worn by the Speaker, to preside over sittings for the first time
last Tuesday.
When
asked about the matter, the unassuming Mr. Lokubandara said that
he had the highest respect for traditions and conventions of the
House and would don the attire, which includes the wig, when necessary
but said he was in no hurry to do so. He is not alone. Another Speaker
who avoided such fuss and frills was the late Anandatissa De Alwis.
