Phone
calls lead to chained woman
Telephone calls were made to HQI, Minuwangoda Gamini Gunawardena
about 10 days ago stating that a woman in the Minuwangoda area was
missing for the last two years.
Inquiries
made by police drew a blank as the home in question was closed on
every visit and no information was available while neighbours said
the occupants were away. But more anonymous calls came in with requests
that investigations be made as to what became of the old woman who
was there.
Police
who made another attempt on May 14 around noon found an old woman
sleeping on a plank bed in a galvanised shed near the house. One
of her legs was tied with a secured chain long enough to enable
her to walk the limited distance to the toilet while there was stale
food and a plastic cup near her.
She
had unkept hair and wore dirty clothes. Police questioned her but
she could hardly answer due to weakness. Police were able to get
her name as W. Eugene but she could not say who had chained her
or why.
Later,
a woman claiming to be her sister had turned up. She said her sister
is 67 and unmarried. All her properties had been written in favour
of her relatives.
Police
untied her and had her admitted to the Minuwangoda hospital. After
obtaining evidence from a few people police were able to arrest
two persons on suspicion. They were remanded pending production
before the Minuwangoda magistrate.
HQI
Gamini Gunawardene, IP Dharmasiri Feernando, SI K.G.de.Silva and
WPC Kumudini consisted of the police team which carried out the
investigations. |
