Campaign
to oust Hakeem
By Harinda Vidanage
A new Muslim political party formed to counter the SLMC led by Rauff
Hakeem has been created with the backing of some top UPFA ministers.
The group has handed over its nominations for the Western Provincial
Council elections.
The
group is led by Nazir Ahmed and it also includes former SLMC member
M. J. M. Muzammil. UPFA strongman Sripathi Sooriyarachchi is coordinating
with this new party on behalf of the government.
The
Sunday Times learns that each individual in this group has been
allocated Rs. one million as campaign funding. This is also part
of the campaign to oust Mr. Hakeem from the leadership of the SLMC
and dislodge him from his position as a Muslim leader.
This
campaign will also target mosques where religious leaders will be
encouraged to question the SLMC leader's credibility. A new media
campaign will also focus on investigations based on Mr. Hakeem's
personal life and more commissions are likely to be appointed to
probe alleged misdeeds of Mr. Hakeem during his tenure as Ports
Minister. |
